Why Corporate Wellness Programs Are Failing Employees

I’ve discovered something troubling about corporate wellness. Companies are pouring billions into employee wellbeing programs while watching engagement tank to historic lows.

The numbers tell a stark story. Global employee engagement dropped to just 21% in 2024. Meanwhile, the UK corporate wellness market hit $2.8 billion and keeps growing.

More wellness spending. Less employee thriving.

This isn’t a coincidence. It’s a fundamental misunderstanding of how humans actually work best.

The Band-Aid Problem

Most wellness programs operate like band-aids on systemic wounds. Organisations treat employee wellbeing as something separate from core business operations.

The result? Only 33% of employees describe themselves as thriving despite unprecedented wellness investment.

I see companies offering meditation apps while maintaining toxic management structures. They provide gym memberships while crushing employees with impossible deadlines. Companies provide treats and snacks while making their employees inactive, unwell, and unproductive. All this is negatively impacting their physical, mental and emotional health.

Ancient martial arts wisdom teaches us something crucial: you cannot separate mind from body, wellness from performance, individual growth from collective success – movement is magnificence!

The Generational Revolution

We’re living through a fundamental shift that most leaders miss entirely.

Our grandparents survived the industrial revolution. Their motivation was survival. Keep your job, feed your family, don’t question authority.

Our parents navigated the information revolution. Their drive was improving standard of living. Better pay meant better life.

Today’s workforce operates in a social revolution. They’re not motivated by survival or just higher salaries – their grandparents and parents took care of that.

They want quality. Quality of work, experiences, environment, opportunities, and meaningful contribution.

Traditional wellness programs miss this entirely. They offer surface-level benefits to people seeking deeper purpose and mastery.

The Martial Arts Solution

True mastery happens when someone aligns physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually in whatever they’re doing.

When people are misaligned, they misperform. When people are truly aligned, they outperform – at levels that surprise everyone.

This means understanding each person’s strengths and creating roles where they can operate optimally. It is about hiring the right people for the right roles in which they will tap into their ultimate potential and shine bright like a diamond. It means building cultures based on integrity, honour, respect, sincerity, justice, loyalty, politeness, mercy, compassion, character and self-control – that is true mastery. Seeing your employees for who they really are, and aligning them to roles that they will smash!

Not as corporate buzzwords. As daily operational principles to live- and work-by.

Organisations need to start with their end vision. What does your dream company look, feel, sound, smell, taste, and think like?

Without that clear well-formed outcome, you’re throwing wellness programs at problems you don’t fully understand, which in turn will create new problems.

The Intention Imperative

The most critical factor for thriving organisations is simple: the right will and intention, backed by consistent positive affirmative action towards that end.

Richard Branson understood this perfectly. “Clients do not come first. Employees come first. If you take care of your employees, they will take care of the clients.”

Stop grappling with linear labour retention as a cost-saving measure. Start focusing on creating exponential environments where people genuinely want to present their best work, are fully present, and present their best selves, and watch your organisation thrive.

The economic stakes are massive. Poor engagement costs the global economy $8.9 trillion annually.

Companies that integrate wellbeing with purpose and performance will dominate 2026. Those treating wellness as a separate initiative will watch their best people walk away.

The choice is clear…

Band-aids or healing the root cause of the problems.

Short-term entertainment or long-term transformation and transcendence.

Modern mediocrity or ancient wisdom.

The path forward requires awareness, courage, intention, and the understanding that true wellness cannot be separated from meaningful work backed by taking a bold step.

I like to say, “If you do the same thing, you’ll get the same outcome. For a different outcome, you need to do something different.”

Are you ready to take a bold step towards a thriving future?

Peace, respect and love, Sifu Lak
