Bruce Lee’s Legacy Lives On in Hertfordshire & London

By Sifu Lak Loi – Founder of JKD London & Martial Mind Power®

In an age where life moves fast, distractions multiply, attention spans diminish, and physical & mental health problems paramount, the pursuit of personal truth has never been more vital. Few figures have embodied that search more completely than Bruce Lee — the movie superstar, martial artist, and philosopher, who transcended culture and combat to redefine what it means to be human. His art, Jeet Kune Do — “The Way of the Intercepting Fist” — was never simply a fighting system. It was a vehicle for understanding oneself in totality and expressing one’s original truth without limitation.

That same legacy now lives on in Hertfordshire through JKD London – founded by Sifu Lak Loi, a third-generation instructor in Bruce Lee’s direct lineage. Following 18 successful years teaching in the heart of the City of London, Sifu Lak has brought Bruce Lee’s authentic art of Jeet Kune Do to his home county as well, sharing not just its physical techniques but its philosophy of self-mastery and personal liberation. His mission is simple yet profound — to empower individuals to tap into their ultimate potential, power, purpose, and live authentically.

The lineage that flows from Bruce Lee to JKD London is a story of purity and preservation. Bruce Lee distilled Jeet Kune Do into a living, breathing art that emphasised simplicity, directness, and freedom. He passed his evolving knowledge to his closest students, including Dan Inosanto, who became both one of his closest friends and the custodian of his teachings as his LA Chinatown Instructor. Inosanto, in turn, trained and certified Tim Tackett, one of the Senior First Ranking Instructors outside Bruce Lee’s original inner circle. Alongside fellow pioneers Bob Bremer and Jim Sewell, Tackett helped establish the legendary Wednesday Night Group in Redlands, California — a community devoted to keeping the “Old School” Jeet Kune Do alive in its truest form. Bremer had trained with Bruce Lee at his LA Chinatown school for two years and received over a thousand hours of private lessons directly from him. Sewell also trained with Bruce in Los Angeles for a year, bringing the lessons of real-world street fighting and philosophical clarity to the next generation of martial artists directly from the golden source.

Today, Sifu Lak Loi is honoured to serve as both a third-generation instructor and executive advisor to this group, continuing the unbroken chain of transmission that leads directly back to Bruce Lee himself. It is a heritage steeped in authenticity — a thoroughbred lineage maintained not for prestige, but for the responsibility of preserving the truth of the art. As Sifu Lak explains, “Jeet Kune Do is not about collecting techniques; it’s about freeing your ambitious mind and attaining personal liberation. It’s about finding and living your own original truth through movement, mindset and mastery.”

Sifu Lak’s own personal journey is one of resilience and rebirth. In 2003, his world collapsed when he lost his job and home in the same week — just as he and his wife discovered they were expecting their first child. The shock threw him into despair and self-doubt, but within that darkness came a revelation. One night, he experienced a vivid dream of Bruce Lee, which set him on a path that would change the course of his life forever. Drawn by intuition and purpose, he trained in one of Bruce Lee’s sparring partners, Ted Wong’s, authentic Jeet Kune Do schools in New York, and later becoming an integral part of the Wednesday Night Group. Through years of study, he not only rebuilt his physical strength but also healed his mind and spirit. The process reawakened his sense of clarity and calling— what he would later define as Martial Mind Power®.

From that transformation emerged his mission: to share the teachings that once saved his life, so that others might rediscover their own true authentic highest self. His school, JKD London, has since become more than a martial arts academy. It is a place of initiation — a space where people learn to fight not only external battles, but internal ones. It blends physical skill with philosophical depth, encouraging students to face themselves with honesty and humility so they can navigate life with honour and integrity.

At JKD London, training is seen not as a transaction but as a journey. Students are welcomed as seekersnot customers. Each person begins with a three-month probationary initiation designed to nurture sincerity, humility, and alignment with the school’s values. Ego, arrogance, and aggression are left at the door. What remains is a community built on respect, trust, and transformation. Membership is not treated as a fee, but as Diksha — a sacred initiation or offering, symbolising the student’s commitment to growth and learning.

Jeet Kune Do, in its purest form, is a philosophy of life, a calling to one’s spirit — home. It teaches adaptability, awareness, and authenticity — qualities that extend far beyond the dojo. In Bruce Lee’s words, “Knowing is not enough; we must apply. Willing is not enough; we must do.” Every movement, every exercise, every moment in the dojo is a lesson in focus, flow, and freedom. Students learn to control their emotions under pressure, sharpen their minds, and move with purpose both in combat and in daily life. The art is as much about mastering one’s mind, emotions, and spirit as it is about mastering techniques.

Over nearly two decades, hundreds of students have described their experience with JKD London as “life-changing,” “empowering,” and “transformative.” They report newfound confidence, clarity, and composure— learning not just to defend themselves, but to understand themselves. They discover that the true opponent is not another person, but themselves… in a state of fear, panic, anxiety, worry, stress, anger, frustration, agitation, and/or annoyance. Through discipline and self-awareness, they learn to dissolve their own barriers and step into the best version of themselves.

Now, with the launch of JKD London – Welwyn, Sifu Lak brings this rare and authentic lineage to Hertfordshire for the very first time. His goal is not only to teach martial arts, but to serve the community— to help people of all ages and backgrounds strengthen their minds, heal their hearts, and reconnect with their innate power.

“Jeet Kune Do,” he says, “is the art of freedom. It’s about breaking through your limitations, facing your fears, and finding peace in motion. In a world of confusion and chaos, we need clarity, calmness, and courage — and that’s what this art teaches.”
